Dundee Mains upgrade work to continue in Clepington Road area in coming weeks

As Scottish Water’s multi-million pound investment in Dundee’s water network continues across the city, work will begin in Clepington Road in the weeks ahead.

Since starting work on the project in May 2016, Caledonia Water Alliance, who are carrying out the work on Scottish Water’s behalf, has replaced or lined over 44 kilometres of mains, that’s equivalent to the length of over five hundred times the height of the iconic Cox’s Stack in Dundee.

Now mains work will move to Clepington Road and a comprehensive traffic management plan has been discussed and agreed in consultation with Dundee City Council in order to minimise disruption as much as possible for local customers.

The section of work will be split into five different and completely separate phases starting on Monday 19 March with each phase expected to last approximately three weeks.

PHASE 1

This will see a west bound closure on Clepington Road between Balgray Place and Caird Avenue. A diversion will be in place via Arklay Street/Dens Road/Moncur Crescent/Caird Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be unaffected.

During this phase Provost Road will be closed in both directions at the junction with Clepington Road. Diversions will be in place and local access will be maintained where possible.

PHASE 2

There will be no lane closures on this phase of work as all work will be carried out on the footpath, however there will be parking restrictions in place on the south side of the road between 106 to 162 Clepington Road. These parking restrictions are vital in order for the work in this phase to be carried out quickly and safely and we would urge customers to please adhere to the restrictions while they are in place.

PHASE 3

There will be an eastbound lane closure on Clepington Road for this phase of work, between Graham Street and Mains Loan. A diversion will be in place along Caird Avenue/Moncur Crescent/Dens Road/Dura Street/Forfar Road. Westbound traffic will be unaffected.

PHASE 4

In the fourth phase a westbound closure will be in place along the same stretch of Clepington Road as in phase three, between Mains Loan and Graham Street. A diversion will be in place along Forfar Road/Dura Street/Dens Road/Moncur Crescent/Caird Avenue. Eastbound traffic will be unaffected.

PHASE 5

The final phase of work in this section will require an eastbound closure on Clepington Road between Fairmuir Street and Old Glamis Road. A diversion route will in place via Strathmartine Road/Caird Avenue. Westbound traffic will be unaffected.

Gina Temple from Caledonia Water Alliance said:

“We identified last summer that the work needed to upgrade the mains in the area would be more complicated than first thought and we are now in a position to start this work and we are looking to try and ensure this phase has as little impact on customers and business owners in the area as possible. We will also have customer liaison staff on site throughout the work to offer advice where needed.”

Clive Duncan from Scottish Water said:

“Any road or lane closure is always a last resort when carrying out any work and in this case there was no way to avoid having traffic management in place, given the nature of the upgrade work required. We worked hard with Dundee City Council to come up with this plan and we are confident that it will help keep the traffic flowing and also allows access to local businesses in the area. This £5m mains upgrade across Dundee is a major investment for the city and will ensure customers can continue to enjoy clear, fresh drinking water long into the future.”
