Scottish Water chairman recognised in New Year Honours

29 December 2017

Lady Susan RiceSusan Rice, Chairman of Scottish Water and the Scottish Fiscal Commission, is to be appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year 2018 Honours List.  Dame Susan – as she will become – will receive the Honour for services to Business, the Arts and Charity.

She said: “I hope my career illustrates the holistic relationship between business, our culture and the arts.  To be appointed a DBE by Her Majesty is a source of great pride for me and my family. I trust it also salutes the many people I’ve worked with who also value the inherent link between business and society.”

As Chief Executive and then Chairman of Lloyds TSB Scotland, Dame Susan became the first woman to head a UK clearing bank in 2000.  She is Senior Independent Director of J Sainsbury plc, a non-executive director of North American Income Trust, the Banking Standards Board, Big Society Capital, and a lay member of Edinburgh University’s Court.

She has also served on the boards of SSE plc and the Bank of England.  At the behest of the banking industry, she currently chairs a UK-wide initiative creating professional standards for bankers, for the first time in the UK.
Dame Susan chairs the Patrons’ Governors of the National Galleries of Scotland and previously chaired the Edinburgh International Book Festival and the Festivals Forum.

She also chairs Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group, influencing Scottish businesses to embrace models of sustainable economic growth, and has spoken internationally about finance for renewables, Scotland’s low carbon agenda and climate justice. In 2012 she became the first woman elected as President of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI).

Born in the US, she has degrees from Wellesley College and Aberdeen University, and honorary doctorates from eight Scottish universities.  She is a Regent of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh and a Fellow of the Chartered Banker Institute, the RSA and the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Dame Susan has led Scottish Water’s board as chairman since June 2015.
