Metering Services

Scottish Water is responsible for the main water meter at your property. We are keen to encourage everyone to use water wisely and to help you become more water efficient. As a result we are developing our range of water meter products and services to give you greater flexibility and choice.

The water meter serving your property tracks the amount of water that you use within your property, and your metered water and waste water bills incorporate charges based on the volumes of water you are using. As a result, it is in your interest to ensure that your water meter is kept in good working order so that it registers the water you are using accurately.

If your water meter is damaged and needs to be replaced, you will have to pay the actual cost of replacing the meter if the damage was caused:

  1. by anyone other than us or a representative working on our behalf
  2. by frost

There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of damage to the water meter serving your property. If the meter freezes, this can result in a loss of water supply and unnecessary cost for you. You can help to protect your water meter, as well as your property, by ensuring that the water meter and pipes inside your property are adequately insulated.

If you are a business customer, the water services and the meter used for the calculation of water used in your property is provided through Licensed Providers. If you wish to discuss any aspect of the provision of the meter, you should contact your Licensed Provider. You will find details of who is your Licensed Provider from your bill. Alternatively, a list of Licensed Providers is available at the Scotland on Tap website

Under these retail market arrangements, Scottish Water no longer has a direct relationship with business customers for the supply of water and waste water services. Scottish Water, as wholesaler, provides the water and waste water services to Licensed Providers, who in turn retail the services to business customers. However as part of that arrangement, Scottish Water owns the water meter.

We will keep you up to date with our new metering products and services as and when these become available, so watch this space.
