Build a Pipe Network

In Victorian times the islanders used to draw clean water from wells. This was not only hard work, but wells don't hold as much water as people use today.

To satisfy the increasing demand for fresh water and cleanliness, the villagers now need to install a new clean water and sewage system.

In this game you have to build a new pipe network for the island. First you will need to decide where to locate the Clean Water Works and the Sewage Works.

Hot tip: Remember that water always flows downhill!

Pipe Network Information

Modern towns and villages need a steady supply of fresh water from a Clean Water Pipe Network. Clean water is needed for drinking, cooking, washing-up, washing clothes, cleaning and cooling machinery. People also need a good Sewage Pipe System to carry waste water from their homes, schools and workplaces to the Sewage Works. There, the waste water can be treated to make it safe before it is released back into a river or the sea.

Pipe networks costs money to build and put in position, so you need to use as few pipes as possible.

Your Pipe Options

You will need to buy a selection of different sized and shaped Clean Water Pipes. You will also need to buy two Water Meters. One needs to be placed at the start of the network and one at the village to check on the water flow and the amount of water used.

You also need to put a StopCock in front of each Water Meter so that Scottish Water can stop the water and check the meter reading.

You will then need to buy a selection of different sized Sewage Pipes. You will also need to place Manholes along the Sewage Pipe Network, with no more than five pipe sections between each. These manholes give the maintenance men access to the sewage pipe to clear blockages and make repairs.

Extra costs

It costs extra money to dig up roads and makes drivers unhappy.

You also need to think about the hidden costs of cutting down woodland and digging up environmentally important areas like marshes. When you cut down trees you destroy the land's natural defence against flooding and when you dig up marshes you destroy the homes of birds and animals. If you do this, you may be fined for destroying an environmentally important area of marsh or woodland. So be careful!

How to Play

In the first stage of the game, drag and drop the Clean Water Works and Sewage Works into their correct position.

In the second stage of the game, pipes can be dragged and dropped into position and the cost will be added to a total in the top right hand corner of the screen. If you have cut down too many trees or destroyed an environmentally sensitive area, you will lose valuable points.

Oil Clean Up Game

When oil spills happen the response must be decisive. Will you be able to scoop up the oil and save the Island's beaches and wildlife?

The Lab

In the lab you can check that everything is okay on the Island. If it is not, you will need to take action - fast!
