Sewer Game

Yikes! We've got a major problem. The sewage pipe network has been blocked and is leaking sewage into the streets. This is because the villagers have been flushing nappies, cotton buds and other bathroom rubbish down the toilet.

If you don't do something the sewage spill could get a lot worse. This will not only be very smelly it is also very unhealthy. If the sewage finds its way into the river it could kill fish and plants, and if it gets into the reservoir the fresh water system would be contaminated. If that happens there could be a outbreak of a deadly disease like Typhoid.

In the past the only way to clear a blockage like this was to send men down to clear it. Fortunately, you have the latest invention RoboPoop that can do the job for you. All you have to do is steer it and don't bang into the walls.

Good luck down there! It's a big job but someone has to do it.

About Sewers

Drains can become blocked naturally over time through a build up of mud, grease and leaves. They can also be damaged by soil movement, tree roots and rusting. When this happens drains need to be cleared and repaired.

Unfortunately, drains also become blocked because people try and pour coffee grinds or cooking fat into kitchen sinks or flush bathroom rubbish down the toilets.

The only waste that should be flushed down the toilet is poop, pee and paper. Bathroom rubbish like cotton wool, nappies, sanitary napkins, cotton wool buds, dental floss, cardboard rolls, old tooth brushes or product packaging should be put in a bag and thrown in the bin. If these things are flushed down the toilet they can cause a blockage in the house or further down the sewer. If lots of people throw rubbish down the toilet there will be a blockage sooner or later.

When this happens Scottish Water has first to locate the blockage. This can be done manually by lifting manhole covers or using a video probe. When a blockage is discovered, engineers have to clear the blockage using one of these methods:

  • Rodding - Connecting steel rods are plunged down the sewer to clear the blockage.
  • High Pressure Jet - High pressure jets cut through the blockage and flush out waste.
  • Electro-Mechanical Machines - Steel cables fitted with blades and cutters are pulled back and forth through the blockage.
