The Glencorse Water Treatment Works will soon be delivering clear, fresh drinking water to around 450,000 customers across Edinburgh and parts of Midlothian.
The new works will replace Scottish Water’s ageing facilities at Fairmilehead and Alnwickhill, which have served the city well, but are now coming towards the end of their operational lives.
Following the largest consultation exercise in Scottish Water’s history, a site was chosen in the Pentland Hills. The works blends sensitively into its surroundings, camouflaged by the largest ‘grass’ roof in Scotland. Its innovative and compact treatment techniques will also help to reduce its overall footprint.
A third of the works energy needs will be supplied by an onsite hydro turbine, while the pioneering development of a mobile pipeline production plant helped remove a million lorry miles from the overall construction process, in a world first development.
The construction project has already won a number of awards, including the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management’s prestigious ‘World of Difference’ prize.
Glencorse will supply clearer, fresher drinking water to thousands of local families and visitors to Scotland’s capital, supporting the growth and development of the city, while benefiting Edinburgh’s £2 billion hotel and tourism industry.
