We monitor the various elements of the composting process at every stage.
These are:
An adequate oxygen supply
An approptiate Carbon: Nitrogen ratio in the mix
Optimum moisture content.
If any of these elements are lacking, or if they are not provided in the right proportions, the microorganisms will not flourish and will not provide enough heat to make good compost.
Monitoring the composting process
With the right mix of raw materials and good aeration it is not difficult for compost to reach the thermophilic phase (45°C - 70°C). Here temperatures exceeding 60°C are maintained for a minimum of 10 days.
Using our in-vessel system, the high temperatures of 60°C are maintained for at least 2 days.
This is followed by a mesophilic (stabilisation) phase (35°C - 55°C) which is estimated to take a further 10 weeks, although mixes with a higher carbon content or a larger particle size may take longer.
>Where the stabilisation phase uses the in-vessel system, stabilisation takes just 8 weeks.
The maturation period varies depending on the end use of the compost.
Trommel screen
Lastly, we screen (sieve) the compost. This gives us the required particle size for the final product - Pod.
The rejected over-size particles are sent back to be processed again. After screening, we can store the final compost product, if necessary, before delivery.
Our final product is classified as a soil conditioner, according to landscape industry specifications. Each batch is clearly and uniquely identified to ensure complete traceability from input source to export destination.
