Cowdenbeath Waste Transfer Station

Sign from Cowdenbeath Waste Transfer Station

Once a redundant sewage works, Scottish Water Waste Services has refurbished the plant to provide reception, storage and blending facilities for liquid waste, creating a preferred environmental and local solution.

Leachate is one type of liquid waste and is defined by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) as “water which seeps through a landfill, and in doing so, extracts substances from the deposited waste”.

Prior to the development of Cowdenbeath Waste Transfer Station, there was a lack of available leachate treatment facilities in Fife and as a consequence leachate was being transported to Grangemouth or even as far as Kilsyth.

Using this new solution in Fife, road tankers transport liquid waste to Cowdenbeath Waste Transfer Station to be pumped to the Leven Valley Sewer, along with sewage, before being treated at Levenmouth Waste Water Treatment Works.

As a result, we estimate a reduction of 94,000 transport kilometres per annum. A better result all round.
