Pod compost deployed in 90 hectare public sector regeneration project
Pod, 100% organic peat free compost from Scottish Water has been used in another high profile landscaping project.
500 tonnes of Pod has been deployed at the Gartcosh Business Interchange in Lanarkshire, a 90 hectare business park on the site of the former steelworks.
The steelworks closed in the mid-80’s and the new development hopes to create up to 3000 new jobs.
The development aims to incorporate a range of energy efficiency measures to minimise its impact on the environment and will also be bordered by an 80 acre nature reserve.
Pod, which is made up entirely from green waste such as grass clippings, wood chips, branches and so forth is processed at the £2million state-of-the-art Composting and Recycling Centre at Deerdykes, Cumbernauld near Glasgow.
The centre is on the site of a former Scottish Water treatment plant.
“We were very interested when we learnt that Scottish Water had recycled one of their plants to create a state-of-the-art composting facility. Sustainability underpins the whole Gartcosh project and we feel that Scottish Water's compost product can contribute to achieving this objective.” Said Simon Bennett part of the Gartcosh project management team at Scottish Enterprise Lanarkshire.
Julian Farrar, Director of Ironside Farrar, Environmental Consultants to the Gartcosh Project comments on the importance of sustainable products that are produced and sourced locally.
“If there is a choice available clients will go for the more environmentally responsible option. We truly believe that nowadays you need a good reason not to be sustainable.
Our public sector clients are very committed to enhancing environmental performance in their projects.” He added, “We were impressed with the strict levels of screening that go into the production of Pod and are confident that we have sourced the right product that is quality assured and has excellent provenance.
We are looking forward to monitoring the results over the next few months.”
“Scottish Water is committed to composting and environmental sustainability long-term, having made a significant investment in the Deerdykes facility,” said Donald MacBrayne, Scottish Water. “Gartcosh is an excellent regeneration project with a great story to tell in itself and we are extremely pleased to have been part of it.”
