Standpipes - The long and short of it
To protect the integrity of our networks, all users of water hydrants must obtain a Scottish Water standpipe licence.
Our standpipe licence will enable you to access our networks and draw water from hydrants using our approved standpipes.
Each of our standpipes is:
- fitted with an anti-pollution device to prevent back-flow and reduce the risk of contamination entering the public water supply.
- distinctly coloured with our corporate colours, blue and purple, and is tagged with an individual registration number.
Applying for a Scottish Water standpipe licence is easy.
Simply complete your application form and return it to our Standpipe Service Desk along with your advance payment to:

Payment can be made by cheque or by official purchase order. The hire charges for 2007/08 for each standpipe licence are as follows:
Period of hire - 3 months £151.10 (Inc VAT)
Period of hire - 12 months £493.50 (Inc VAT)

Where do I collect the standpipe?
You can collect your standpipe by contacting our Standpipe Service Desk who will make arrangements for you to collect your standpipe at one of the following Stores:

If you prefer, you can request that the standpipe be delivered to you by courier.
How do I return the standpipe?
You can return your standpipe to either of our Scottish Water Stores as mentioned above.
If you would like to make alternative arrangements for the return of your standpipe, please contact the Standpipe Service Desk.
How do I renew my licence?
Two weeks before your licence is due to expire we will send you a reminder letter and application form for you to renew your licence.
Each standpipe licence can be renewed on a quarterly or annual basis.
Payment can be made by cheque or official purchase order and should be included with your renewal application.

Unauthorised use of fire hydrants and taking water without permission are criminal acts. Continued use of non-approved standpipes may lead to prosecution.
