24th August 2007 - Stakeholder Management Continues
Our programme of stakeholder and community engagement activities has been progressing through August as we continue to spread the news and brief various groups on the background and future plans for our project. We recently met with Rhona Brankin MSP (Midlothian) who was accompanied by Lorna Goudie representing Damhead Community Council. Following this valuable meeting, we will be producing the set of Questions and Answers to address concerns that may arise from residents regarding pipeline activities.
We subsequently attended Damhead Community Council at the Snowsports Centre Hillend on August 20 to give a talk about our plans for the Glencorse site near Penicuik and how Damhead will be affected by new water pipes that will pass through the Damhead area. We have also visited a number of local residents though August.
At the end of the week, we met with Jeremy Purvis MSP (Tweeddale, Ettrick & Lauderdale), to discuss project progress, our ongoing community engagement plans and our planned education programme. "Jeremy Purvis MSP & Richard Anderson pictured"
Our next Community Council meeting will be with Penicuik & District Community Council on 10th September. We have provided information boards which can be seen at Penicuik & District Community Council Street Fair, to be held at Penicuik Town Hall on Saturday 25th August.

20th August 2007 - Site Investigation works commence
Ground investigation works on the proposed Glencorse Water Treatment Works are set to commence on Monday 20th August 2007
These works will include digging trial pits using a ‘JCB’ type excavator and taking boreholes using an ‘A’ frame type drilling rig.
The ground investigation works on the Glencorse site are expected to last approximately 3 to 4 weeks and will provide valuable information as the design of the Works progresses.
After completing all of the proposed trial pits and boreholes on the treatment works site the ground investigation contractor will then move on to the proposed pipeline routes.
Other work relating to the Glencorse Water Treatment Works will include additional ecological surveys mainly looking for bats. The bat surveys are also planned to commence on Monday 20th August and the potential 'bat areas' may require to be visited up to 10 times for a full assessment. This may require 3 or 4 weeks of time to ensure 10 days of suitable conditions. Bat surveys are best carried out at dawn and dusk, requiring our surveyors will be in the field during dark and using torchlights. Archaeologists will also be walking the pipeline route over a 2 day period during the coming weeks.
Other work to be undertaken in the near future will involve trial pits to be excavated within the carriageway of the A702. Scottish Water will be diverting existing raw water mains to allow construction of the proposed roundabout on the A702 with Mauricewood Road.
These trial pits are needed to establish the exact position and condition of existing pipe work. This work is currently planned for early September and traffic control measures will be in place to protect construction personnel and ensure safety of road users.
13th August 2007 - Stakeholder Management moves into next phase
Following the earlier announcement in June to locate the new water Treatment Works in Glencorse, Midlothian, the project team have been making significant progress in contacting all stakeholders with updates on project development.
“Following our successful “Meet the Team” surgery with neighbouring residents, we have been quick to contact other groups and let them know how we are addressing local concerns”, said Richard Anderson, Senior Project Manager within Scottish Water’s Capital Investment Delivery section.
“Throughout July and August we are meeting with other key stakeholders to emphasis the early discussions with neighbours and how we have already amended and altered building layouts, in a bid to gain their acceptance”, he continued.
A recent Briefing to Councillors and Planners from Midlothian Council was key to explaining not only the design processes but the extensive stakeholder management planned for the project.
Further meetings with MSP’s, Councillors, Community Councils and landowners are being planned together with exhibitions and presentations.

9th July 2007 - Bright Yellow Jackets – What are they doing?
Over the coming weeks people wearing bright reflective yellow jackets may be seen in the fields near to the proposed site for the new Glencorse Water Treatment Works.
These jackets will be worn by a number of different professions carrying out investigatory work in the area. These include:
• Environmental Engineers: Carrying out habit surveys and environmental impact assessments
• Topographic Surveyors: Taking measurements so that topographic plans of the area can be created to show accurately the land features and natural contours
• Geotechnical Engineers: Taking soil samples and digging trial pits to confirm the types of material present underground
To avoid disruption and access to some of the land we require to survey, we have engaged a specialist aerial survey firm. They will map a large amount of the pipeline routes and treatment works area from the air minimising the extent we need to be on peoples land.
Operating out of Edinburgh Airport, people may soon spot a light aircraft flying a number of runs over the project area between Penicuik and Edinburgh.
26th June 2007 - Local Residents "Meet the Team"
On 26th June 2007 the local residents living in the immediate vicinity of the new Glencorse works were given the chance to meet the Scottish Water project team at the local pub, the Flotterstone Inn.
They were given the opportunity to ask questions face to face with the Scottish Water representative and able to share their concerns and issues regarding the proposed Glencorse Water Treatment Works.
The residents were presented with information about the project including an annotated aerial photograph (click here to view) used for discussion purposes.
The attendance was very encouraging with a total of over 30 people attending during the afternoon and evening sessions.

The project team were grateful for the opportunity to discuss the technical and engineering aspects of the project
A summary of the issues discussed can be found by clicking here. The attendees were given the opportunity to record their feedback in writing on a comments sheet provided on the day.
We will continue to have close consultation with these residents over the coming months to help ensure that our proposals respect their views and thoughts on the project.
In addition to consultation with this group Scottish Water will be hosting a similar event for the wider community. This will be held later in the summer when more detailed plans will be available.
26th June 2007 - Customer Service Centre Project Champions Meet the Team.
Five members of our Customer Service Centre visited the site of the proposed £60m Glencorse Water Treatment Works this week as part of their training and familiarisation for the Edinburgh Drinking Water Project.
Richard Anderson, Senior Project Manager commented, “ Following the formal public announcement to locate the proposed new Works at Glencorse in Midlothian, it has been important to strengthen the communications team handling customer enquiries.”
He continued, “Having our project champions visit the site provides valuable first hand experience when answering customer enquiries. Our reputation with customers is enhanced and it also assists the quality of information passed on to the project designers.”
The Project Champions met the project team ahead of a planned “Meet the Team” for local residents and neighbours of the Glencorse development area. Two of the CSC are presently Project Champions with the Katrine Water Project and they added “ It makes our job much easier when we can assure customers we have visited the site, and we have been fully briefed by the project team. It builds up the customers confidence that we understand their concerns.”
Project Champion training will continue over the next three years to ensure all enquiries are well managed and answered quickly.
