The following facts and figures relate to the Glencorse Water Treatment Works in Midlothian:

175,000,000 litres of water will be treated every day - that's enough to fill 2 million baths every day OR enough water to fill 70 Olympic size swimming pools every day.

More than 3200 miles of reinforcing steel bar will be used - sufficient to stretch from Edinburgh to Montreal, Quebec OR commute between Glasgow and Edinburgh 75 times!

Over 18 kilometres of new pipelines will be installed to send the new treated water into Edinburgh, that is longer than one thousand eight hundred (1800) double decker buses line up in a row!!

How can you use water wisely?

  • Have a shower instead of a bath if you can - it uses a third less water. But remember, power showers use a lot more water.
  • Don't leave the tap running when you brush your teeth.
  • Rinse vegetables in a basin rather than under a running tap.
  • Use a bucket for washing the car rather than a hose - this can save 100 litres of water per wash.
  • Identify and fix leaks and dripping taps quickly.

How much water does everyday items use?

  • Old toilets can use 10 litres of water per flush and new toilets 7.5 litres or less.
  • Having a bath will use 80 litres of water and showers use about one third of this amount.
  • The average washing machine uses 95 litres per wash.
  • Modern dishwashers can use 30 - 50 litres per load compared to hand washing dishes which uses 19 litres.
  • In the garden a sprinkler for watering the lawn can use as much water in one hour as a family of four uses in a day.
  • A garden hose will use 200 litres in the 15 minutes it takes to wash a car.

The construction of large civil engineering projects, delivering improvements to water quality to a city, brings tremendous opportunities to schools, colleges and Universities.

During the life of the Glencorse Water Treatment Works Project, we plan to maximise this opportunity to the benefit of local schools and students.

Helping local schools understand the many different careers prospects involved, and the people behind the scenes, can be brought into the classroom.  Helping the children understand the various stages of construction, from planning to completion is best explained on-site.

We would be delighted to hear from local schools to learn how we can add to your planned curriculum, and work together on the largest single project being undertaken by Scottish Water.
