Winds of Change for Upperton

What we're doing

The wastewater network within Upperton will be transformed to improve the local environment. This will also allow Scottish Water to help North Lanarkshire Council meet its future growth plans for the area.

There is now the opportunity to revitalise the village, which was the location of the former remand institution, with ambitious plans for dozens of new houses.

Growing, thriving communities

Longriggend is a desirable part of the country; located in the heart of the central belt it has good commuter links to both Glasgow and Edinburgh, with Falkirk, Airdrie and Cumbernauld all less than 10 miles away.

Scottish Water design engineers are gearing up to start soon and local customers have already been consulted on the project including a recent open day in the village.

Longriggend is one of a number of communities in which Scottish Water is helping to inject fresh life and provide clearer, fresher water and a cleaner environment.

Strategic Development Manager, Andy Wilson is delighted this site is being revitalised:

“A number of communities are rising phoenix-like, with more and more developers thinking outside the box.

“In addition to Longriggend, the former steel plant at Ravenscraig will be transformed into Scotland’s first new town in 50 years. Around 3500 homes, as well as office and leisure developments are planned for the Motherwell site. At the former site of Glasgow Zoo in Uddingston around 400 homes are also being constructed.

“We encourage any developer in the Lanarkshire area, and across Scotland, to speak to Scottish Water at an early stage as they plan future projects.”

The 12 month Longriggend project be finished in summer 2009.

The majority of work will take place within the confines of the Upperton Wastewater Treatment Works themselves, therefore keeping disruption to a minimum.
