Investment for Tyndrum will improve water services

In the small village of Tyndrum at the foot of Ben Lui, Scottish Water is investing £4.4million to improve the water quality and the waste water services.

Tyndrum water treatment works

A £3million project will provide fresher, clearer water and ensure that the water supply to Tyndrum continues to be secure and safe. Work started in October last year and is expected to finish in July 2008.

What we're doing

The dedicated waste water treatment works will receive a £1.4million upgrade. This will increase the water quality in the River Fillan, an important area for trout fishing.  New filters will be installed that will improve the efficiency of the works and provide higher quality treated waste water.

Completion date

The work is due to be completed in October 2008.

Area affected

Although it has a small population of 170, Tyndrum is a popular tourist destination with a leisure park, caravan site and numerous hotels and an important stop on numerous routes, including motorways and the West Highland Way. The upgrades to the water facilities will maintain the constant supply of water and waste water services in the coming years and also guarantee that as the town grows, the networks are able to keep up with additional demands.

Project benefits

A challenging aspect for both of the Tyndrum works is the wide variation in quantities they have to provide or treat. The levels rise considerably during the summer tourist season, meaning they have to cope with wide variances in activity, but careful planning can prevent operational and process issues.

This programme of upgrading and refurbishing water and waste water treatment facilities is part of the £44million that we will invest in Stirling by 2009, and is part of a £116million investment campaign for Forth Valley and Argyll & Bute.

Partners

The Tyndrum projects will be delivered through Scottish Water Solutions - the joint venture partnership of utility companies and contractors set up by Scottish Water to transform the country's water and wastewater infrastructure.

Local contractors and the economy will be given a boost as Scottish Water Solutions sub-contract to companies for consultation, construction and maintenance of these projects.
