Wee county to benefit from investment in Alloa

What we're doing

As part of a rolling programme of investment in Clackmannanshire, over £2.1million is being invested at Alloa waste water treatment works.

An £877,000 refurbishment project that started in May 2008 will ensure 45,000 people in the Alloa area continue to have a reliable service from this facility. In addition, a recently completed £1.2million odour control project will address a history of odour problems at the site.

Extensive surveys and assessments have resulted in the formulation of a recently completed Odour Improvement Plan (OIP). The project included installing new covered sludge holding tanks that are fitted with odour extraction technology, a filter to minimise odours when sludge is delivered to the site and a two-stage odour extraction unit. This unit will be capable of removing 99% of hydrogen sulphide – the main odour-causing component at many waste water treatment facilities.

The work to get the odour controls in place took place to a demanding schedule in poor weather conditions and at night and was completed on 31st March 2008. There will now be further odour assessments to determine if extra measures are needed.

Amount invested

The investment at Alloa is part of a £25.5million investment programme across the Wee County. The key project areas will improve service to customers and facilitate development, and the investment is part of a £116million campaign for the Forth Valley and Argyll & Bute.

Partners

A large amount of these projects will be delivered through Scottish Water Solutions - the joint venture partnership of utility companies and contractors set up by Scottish Water to help/transform the country's water and wastewater infrastructure.

Local contractors and the economy will be given a boost as Scottish Water Solutions contract companies for consultation, construction and maintenance of these projects.
