Edinburgh Marathon

Scottish Water goes the extra mile

There were no hurdles from Scottish Water for the Edinburgh Marathon on 25 May 2008.

What we're doing

It is not only the local environment we are considering but the needs of local people and the local economy. This important stretch of the Edinburgh Marathon route was restored for the big race. Nearly 14,000 runners pounded their way along the promenade on Sunday and it was our responsibility to ensure they had a hassle free run along one of the event’s most scenic stretches.

Not only was the area of work reinstated for the race, but at the request of the organisers our contractors maintained parts of the Herras fencing in order to help them with the route. A road sweeper was also dispatched to tidy up the area ahead of Sunday’s event.

A new 1200 metre rising main and gravity sewer is being constructed to further protect the East Lothian coastline from any potential sewer spill.

Project benefits

Edinburgh Marathon organiser, Damien O’Looney, was delighted that Scottish Water was able to help the runners along the coastal stretch:

"I would like to thank Scottish Water for their co-operation in reinstating the road on Musselburgh Promenade to allow the marathon to run on the beautiful coastline of East Lothian."

“The construction of this 1200 metre twin rising main and gravity sewer will help to further protect the beautiful East Lothian coastline."
