Dunragit Fish Rescue
What we're doing
A one-day scheme involved the project team creating a pool near the area of construction, which contains salmon and the primitive lamprey.
Scottish Water’s Environment Team worked closely with the Galloway Fishery Trust on the rescue project. Expert fisheries biologists were then involved in electro-fishing, in order to capture the fish to remove them from the work site for their protection.
Amount invested
£1.3 million to upgrade the local wastewater treatment works, improving the quality of the local burn.
Working with Scottish Natural Heritage at the River Esk
Scottish Water has also been working closely with Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to protect the rare river jelly lichen, as work to construct a new outfall pipe is planned for the River Esk. River jelly lichen only grows in very clean, fast flowing waters. Scotland is now considered to be the world stronghold for the species.
Chris Miles, Area Manager with SNH in Dumfries and Galloway welcomed the care being shown by Scottish Water with regards the river jelly lichen.
“The river jelly lichen appears to be a very rare species with good populations on the Esk. The work by Scottish Water should help sustain those populations, a significant contribution to local biodiversity action.”
