West Lothian's Vision

Clearer, Fresher Water

Scottish Water has already identified a number of significant projects to provide clearer, fresher drinking water for customers in West Lothian. A significant proportion of Scottish Water’s budget for the region, over the year ahead, will be directed towards improving the quality of drinking water across the region.

Among the key projects are:

  • Investing nearly £10 million at Marchbank will not only help deliver improved quality drinking water to people in the North of Edinburgh, but also those across large parts of West Lothian. The upgrade programme began in the spring 2008.
  • Communities from Bathgate and Armadale to Whitburn and Winchburgh will benefit from the £2.5 million  investment programme at Pateshill WTW. The project, which will begin in July, will deliver clearer fresher water to customers across region.

Clearer, Fresher, Greener

Over the next year more than £8 million of Scottish Water’s budget for West Lothian, will be invested to improve the environment. A number of significant projects, right across the county, have already been identified.

Among the key projects are :

  • Upgrade work is planned for the Blackridge WwTW which will improve the environment in this rapidly expanding community to the western edge of the region.
  • A million pounds refurbishment at Winchburgh will also benefit this rapidly expanding community to the east of the region.
  • While investing around £2 million upgrading the pumping stations at Mosside in Bathgate and at Polbeth, will help improve the environment for local people.

Clearer, Fresher, Greener, More

We are aware of the increased demand for new homes in parts of West Lothian and the local authority has provided us with lists of their priority projects. Scottish Water plays an important part in the process, and we are phasing our investment in line with their plans. Across the region around a half of our budget for the next year is targeted towards growth.

Some of these key projects include:

  • The Marchbank Water Treatment Works will be upgraded at a cost of nearly £10 million. Adding a Dissolved Air Flotation system to the facility will allow for more raw water to be processed. This will provide further capacity and allow for growth in some parts of West Lothian.
  • Further growth will be created at Polkemmet, Whitburn, where Scottish Water is assisting developer Ecosse Regeneration Limited with a new housing, business and leisure development. A £2.5 million investment at Pateshill and the diverting of a 27 inch trunk main will assist the development, allowing 2000 new homes to be built and 4,000 new jobs to be created.
