Bruce Embankment pumping station refurbished ahead of schedule

What we've been doing

Residents and visitors to St Andrews are benefiting after Scottish Water refurbished Bruce Embankment pumping station, which was overhauled after damage from fat, oil and grease had left it in need of repair. The machinery in the pumping station was completely replaced and a modification to the machinery made it easier to remove grease deposits.

Scottish Water met all the conditions laid down by SEPA, Fife Council and the local community. The project was finished three weeks ahead of SEPA’s deadline, with the facility going back into operation on Friday 8th February 2008.

Byzak Ltd was contracted by Scottish Water to create a temporary facility in the adjacent car park that had to meet stringent environmental regulations laid down by SEPA while the work was carried out. Twice-daily patrols of the beach were performed to ensure all environmental constraints were met.

Be careful how you dispose of fat

Previous problems at the pumping station can be attributed to the disposal of fat, oil and grease into the waste water network by local residents and businesses.

We worked with...

SEPA, Scottish Water and Fife Council Environmental Services are working in harmony to highlight the problems this waste material causes in St Andrews.

In March 2007, the Bruce Embankment pumping station was visited by clean up teams who excavated twelve tonnes of fat, oil and grease at a cost of £30,000.

When these substances are poured down the drain, they collect in the pipes and solidify once cold – so they can travel a distance from the source before acting as a ‘stopper’ that causes a build up of waste water back along the pipe.

This can lead to raw sewage leaking out onto roads, pavements, public areas and even into people’s homes.
