April’s Ours in Dumfries & Galloway

What we're doing

April Wastewater Projects

We’re playing our part to further protect the rivers and streams running through Dumfries and Galloway. Improvements to wastewater treatment works will deliver tangible benefits to the environment and the local communities using them for fishing, canoeing and other leisure activities.

  • At Beeswing, outside Dumfries, local people will now benefit from a £633,000 investment. Work to deliver two new septic tanks, serving the community, is complete.
  • A £330,000 programme of work in Dumfries, to closedown the Heathhall site is now complete and will further improve the quality of the Lochar Water.

April Growth Projects

  • In Dumfries the Dalscone WwTW will receive a £6 million improvement package. Work will be carried out to construct a new inlet works, along with two new settlement tanks and two final settlement tanks, providing additional capacity allowing for growth equivalent to 3,000 new residents in the town.
  • The communities of Newton Stewart and Minigaff will benefit from the £11 million joint programme to improve the local wastewater treatment works and pumping station. The project will not only help the council meet growth projections, but it will also significantly improve the quality of the River Cree.
  • Around 8000 people in the Thornhill, Penpont, Moniave, Auldgirth and Parkgate areas will benefit from the £4 million programme to upgrade the Kettleton Water Treatment Works, also helping the local authority to meet growth projection targets.
  • The local authority has identified its growth projections for the Penpont area. Scottish Water’s £900,000 project to combine the two existing septic tanks at Penpont and Pringleton into one large tank will help to facilitate this need for expansion.

Under the same umbrella

Councillor Roger Grant, Chairman of the Planning, Housing and Development Committee is grateful for Scottish Water’s support:

“It’s great news for the region that Scottish Water has committed this significant level of funding to Dumfries and Galloway. Not only will our residents receive the health benefits of improved water quality, the Council’s aspirations for economic growth will also receive a boost. Without the improvements to waste water treatment, the growth in new housing and development would be hampered.

“We are determined to make the most of the economic potential of this beautiful part of Scotland. Our thanks go to Scottish Water for this current schedule of works and we will be encouraging them to continue this level of investment in the years that follow.”

The Development Liaison team’s Andy Wilson is confident Scottish Water is playing its part in helping Dumfries and Galloway grow:

“We are aware of the increased demand for new homes across Dumfries and Galloway and have been working hard not only with the council but developers to ensure we target our investment in areas where additional capacity in our networks is required.

“It's important that the council and developers keep us informed of their plans, so we can phase our investment in line with this."
