Glencorse and beyond: Investment in Midlothian

Clearer, Fresher Water

Scottish Water has already identified a number of significant projects to provide clearer, fresher drinking water for customers in Midlothian. More than a quarter (27%) of Scottish Water’s budget for the region, over the year ahead, will be directed towards improving the quality of drinking water.

Among the key projects are :

  • £9.5 million upgrade to the Rosebery Water Treatment Works will provide clearer, fresher drinking water to communities across Midlothian, completed late summer 2008.
  • A number of communities across the region will also benefit from the massive Glencorse Midlothian project which will improve the quality of drinking water to around half a million people across Edinburgh and the Lothians. see www.scottishwater.co.uk/glencorse

Over the next year over a third (37%) of Scottish Water’s budget for Midlothian, will be invested to improve the environment. A number of significant projects have already been identified.

Among the key projects are :

  • Upgrading Gorebridge WwTW, by adding additional sand filter treatment facilities and additional settlement capacity, completed late summer 2008
  • Early in 2008 work will begin to protect the environment with work on the storm sewer network in parts of Penicuik. This will deliver environmental benefits to the River North Esk.
  • Work has been completed on a new WwTw at Blachshiels, improving the environment for around a hundred local residents.
  • On the outskirts of Dalkeith, work will shortly be completed to alleviate the flooding risk from the small community of Pickledirt Farm.

Clearer, Fresher, Greener, More

We are aware of the increased demand for new homes in parts of Midlothian and the local authority has provided us with lists of their priority projects.

Scottish Water plays an important part in the process, and we are phasing our investment in line with their plans. Across the region a significant part of our budget for the next year is targeted towards growth.

Some of these key projects include:

  • We are working with developers in the South East Wedge, including parts of Midlothian, to construct a new treated water storage tank and around 6 miles of trunk mains. This will allow further development in this rapidly expanding part of the Lothians.
  • A £2 million project at Gorebridge will begin in the Spring, providing additional capacity at the wastewater treatment works. This will free up extra space for around 1400 more people in the area.
