Benbecula

Scottish Water is looking to the long-term as it identifies solutions for the recent sewer discharge into the Benbecula Burn.

Following recent road maintenance work by South Lanarkshire Council on Blacklaw Drive, large volumes of tar were deposited in the sewer network. Scottish Water carried out an intensive CCTV investigation programme in the area and our engineers removed these congestions.

What we're doing

Scottish Water is working to alleviate this sewer discharge within the St Leonards area. Our engineers have removed the blockage in the network, which is located a significant distance away from the burn itself.

Scottish Water treats this matter seriously and that is why we are keeping a very close watch on Benbecula Burn. Our engineers monitor the quality of the watercourse on a regular basis, taking appropriate action when necessary.

We're working with

Councillor Graham Scott requested a site meeting involving all three elected members for East Kilbride East:

“I am gratified by the quick response of Scottish Water to the recent problems in the Benbecula Burn and the removal of the offending sewage. On behalf of my constituents, I am hopeful that a constructive dialogue between South Lanarkshire Council and Scottish Water will lead to a permanent solution to the problem.”

Scottish Water is looking to identify a long-term solution to improve the quality of water bodies within East Kilbride. Paul Anderson, James McMillan and the team will keep local representatives informed.

Councillor Jim Wardhaugh is looking to work closely with Scottish Water in resolving the issue for his constituents in the St Leonards area and also commented:

“This problem has been on-going for many years and a permanent solution is certainly needed. This should be a high priority for Scottish Water. While appreciating that this will require considerable investment it is nevertheless essential that measures are taken in the short term to mitigate the situation.”
