Braidwood and Crossford
Scottish Water is protecting the natural environment in the South Lanarkshire villages of Braidwood and Crossford with a £1.2 million investment in the local waste water treatment network.
The Braidwood and Crossford Waste Water Treatment Works currently fully treats waste water from the two villages to a high standard before final effluent is discharged into the Mashock Burn, which then flows into the River Clyde.
The objective of this project is to improve the quality of the Mashock Burn to meet future standards and SEPA consent.
We will remove the final effluent outfall from the Mashock Burn to the higher dilution and rapid flows of the River Clyde.
What we're doing
After initial investigation work in the early part of 2007, the decision was taken to refurbish and upgrade key elements of the existing plant and move the outfall from the Mashock Burn, by a new pipeline (300mm), to the higher dispersion and rapid flow of the River Clyde.
The location chosen offers a permanently submerged deep channel of fast flowing water, so it is ideal for dispersion and dilution of the treated effluent from the works.
We're working with...
Scottish Water is required to improve the quality of water course under EU legislation, with SEPA determining the quality of that discharge.
Jim Gemmell, Area Manager, Environmental Protection and Improvement said:
“Currently treated sewage is discharged in a small burn, the Mashock, running through the Crossford area, adjacent to Braidwood Road. This burn empties into the Clyde close to Mashock Cottage.
We have sought guidance from Scottish Natural Heritage and other organisations, and carried out the following environmental surveys:
- Nesting bird and bat survey for 2 trees to be felled on the WwTW site
- Bat emergence (dawn and dusk) survey for the same 2 trees.
- Otter and water vole survey
- River habitat and fish habitat survey with particular focus on salmon and lamphrey.
Scottish Water has kept Crossford residents informed of this work since July 2007, including attending a local Neighbourhood Watch meeting to provide residents with information on the project. A Project Information Day was held in Crossford Village Hall on the 19th of June 2008.
