Wick households and businesses benefit from flood scheme
What we're doing
Households and businesses in the Harbour Quay area of Wick are benefiting from the completion of a project to prevent sewage flooding.
The sewer under Harbour Quay was prone to backing up when downpours of rain filled the system. Now, a new bypass sewer and storm water chamber mean the system can cope during extreme weather.
Amount invested
£320,000
The project is part of Scottish Water’s 2010 Vision for the Highlands, a £200million programme of improvements across the region. £20million is expected to be invested in Caithness & Sutherland by 2010.
Start date
March 2008
End date
August 2008
Project benefits
Businesses in the area include the Quayside B&B which in recent years experienced sewage flooding at its front door. Despite the high cost of work required, Scottish Water made the improvements a priority.
Bob Turner, proprietor of the Quayside B&B (pictured left), said:
"Starting in 1997, we experienced significant flooding at the roadside of Harbour Quay, exacerbated by the road camber. Scottish Water's new sewer should alleviate all future flooding and they are to be commended for taking action. The contractors involved were professional and considerate during the work so they deserve thanks too.”
