Supporting Annan

What we're doing

The Galabankies compete for the Challenge Cup, and Scottish Water’s rising to the challenge of protecting the natural environment and delivering clearer, fresher drinking water in this part of Dumfries and Galloway.

The hat-trick of environmental projects includes:

  • A £2.1 million investment in the Annan Welldale pumping station will help to protect the quality of the River Annan, which flows into the Solway Firth. Work to build a new pumping station is gathering pace, with delivery partner GMJV having kicked off in June. Scottish Water expects to blow the full-time whistle on that project early next year.
  • A new overflow is being constructed at the site, with additional storm screening. This will help to further protect the sensitive waters of the estuary during extreme weather conditions.
  • Annan WwTW has undergone a £900,000 investment programme, which has also seen GMJV upgrade all odour control equipment at the site and add covers to the inlet area of the works.
Work was completed on the project earlier this summer. This is Scottish Water’s first line of defence in addressing the odour issues within the town.

Amount invested

Our customers are the winners from £9 million of investments in the water and waste water network.

Partners

GMJV:  £1.75 million flood alleviation scheme, which was completed in spring, removing the worry of flooding from ten local families.

Carrillion: construction of large storage areas at Johnstone Street, Newington Park and Drummond Road. In times of extremely heavy rainfall these will fill, before gradually releasing the rain water back into the network when it is safer to do so.

Annan customers will also benefit from investment at the Black Esk Water Treatment Works:

Delivery partners Carillion completed the £4million improvement programme at the Black Esk works, earlier this month.

Commentary from the dugout

David Bowmer, GMJV and Harry Cairney, Annan Athletic

As his team headed for the Scottish Football League, Annan Athletic boss Harry Cairney admitted he was impressed by Scottish Water’s premier performance – he knows that keeping his players properly hydrated can prove to be a match winner:

“Maintaining a healthy diet and keeping properly hydrated is so important for our players – it can give us that vital edge over our opponents. Healthy, hydrated muscle tissue is around 75% water. We encourage the team to drink water before, during and after matches and training to help boost energy levels, stay alert and help prevent cramp.”

Area Affected

Annan will benefit from nearly £5 million of investment to improve the quality of the River Annan and the Solway Firth; while a major flood alleviation scheme will help to address the flooding frustration felt by a number of local families.
