A central role in Scotland’s green economy

Formed 1 April 2008, Scottish Water Horizons is an innovative addition to the Scottish Water family.

A new commercial subsidiary, the enterprise is an active investor in the green technologies sector.

Horizons, as the name suggests, will itself seek new areas to target.  The returns generated from this commercial activity will be re-invested into our renewables businesses and other related projects.

Key activities under Scottish Water Horizons include:

Scottish Water Waste Services, producer of Pod compost and top soil, currently handles a number of wastes such as liquid waste, green waste and sludges at its operations at Deerdykes in Cumbernauld and Cowdenbeath in Fife.

Future plans include the production of ‘green’ electricity by burning gas produced by the Anaerobic Digestion of kitchen waste. This will be used to power the plant, some of the neighbouring industrial units and eventually some of that electricity will be sold back to the National Grid.

Further sites such as Johnstone in Renfrewshire are in development for waste recycling and green energy generation.

OneSource, a newly launched infrastructure service, offers an integrated investigate-design-construct approach to utility provision for new housing developments.

OneSource is already looking to broaden its horizons by working with a major developer to project manage a multi-utility solution to an affordable housing scheme in North Lanarkshire.

Property Services’ focus is to develop new business opportunities.

Recent successes include

  • pioneering installation of fibre optic cable within sewers to extend telecommunications;
  • leasing of Scottish Water land and property assets to telecommunication companies;
  • commercial provision of infrastructure information to third parties via its Property Search service.

The creation of Scottish Water Horizons brings together all of Scottish Water’s commercial and business development experience with the associated specialist skills into a single body focused on playing a central role in Scotland’s green economy.

Scottish Water Horizons will play a key role in helping Scottish Water achieve its challenging environmental and sustainability goals and in helping others to achieve theirs.
