Protecting your natural environment on Dervaig

What we're doing

The completion of a project to provide a public sewer system at Dervaig. This means an end to untreated sewage going into Loch A’Chumhainn and will improve the quality of water in the sea loch.

Scottish Water’s work there has enabled us to meet our requirements under the European Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

Area Affected

The 200-strong community in the Dervaig area is served by a combined sewerage system which collects about 75% of the village’s waste water. The remainder of the village is served by private septic tanks and sewers.

The combined sewerage system previously discharged untreated sewerage into the loch. The remaining properties have private septic tanks which discharge partially treated sewerage into the loch or local watercourses and soakaways.

With the completion of the Dervaig project, untreated sewerage from the residents who use the combined system is collected and conveyed through a new sewer pipe to a new pumping station built on the outskirts of the village.

The pumping station then pumps the waste to a new wastewater treatment works consisting of septic tank and reedbed. The final effluent then flows back along a sewer and discharges via an outfall.
