Sustainable Development Policy

Scottish Water recognises the contribution it has on the environmental, social and economic fabric of Scotland.  Our core business of providing water and wastewater services to our customers is integral to public health and the protection of the environment. 

In progressing with our Sustainable Development Duty Scottish Water aim to:

Promote Good Governance

  • Work in partnership with our regulators and sponsors  to develop strategies and investment plans in line with sustainable development principles
  • Develop and implement a strategic framework to ensure that sustainable development is embedded throughout Scottish Water’s operations and activities

Live within environmental limits

  • Ensure the management of our water and wastewater operations in order to protect public health and the environment, and promote the value of Water for Health
  • Continually improve compliance with all applicable environmental legislation and standards
  • Protect and manage our water resources and encourage our customers to use these wisely
  • Manage our landholdings and water resources to protect the natural and cultural heritage, enhance biodiversity and encourage managed access while safeguarding water quality

Achieve a Sustainable Economy

  • Work to promote sustainable economic development through partnership with key stakeholders to optimise available capacity for new developments
  • Make a positive contribution to the economic development of the communities we serve, and support fragile communities through the provision of appropriate water and wastewater services
  • Ensure the effective use of natural resources, energy and raw materials and implement sustainable management of key waste streams
  • Build sustainable development principles into the procurement strategy and policies from the  supply chain through to delivery

Ensure a strong healthy society

  • Provide customers with a safe, reliable water supply meeting regulatory requirements
  • Work with others to progress and promote sustainable development and play our part in the life of Scotland and the communities we serve
  • Invest in our staff to protect health and welfare and provide opportunities for their development, and encourage staff to play their part in the communities in which they live and work

Use sound science responsibly

  • Gain a greater understanding of the impacts of climate change on our operations so that we can work to mitigate their effect, and minimise our emissions of greenhouse gases
  • Provide innovative and sustainable solutions within our investment planning and capital programme
