Scottish Water's involvement in composting is an exciting development for the company and for the future of composting in Scotland.
We have the facilities to develop the latest composting methods, with the expertise to back it up, not to mention being a brand that our customers already know and rely on.
Deerdykes Composting & Organics Recycling Facility was developed from a redundant asset belonging to Scottish Water during 2004 and 2005.
In our first year of operation we have treated 20,000 tonnes of green and woody materials generated by Local Authorities’ collections.
These materials have been processed outside using an extended beds system.
These are long low mounds of compost, typically 1.5 to 3 metres high. We turn them at regular intervals to provide air for the microbes digesting the organics.
In-vessel composting
Scottish Water is producing organic compost on a large scale, using the latest technology and to the highest standards. Open air methods of composting, like windrows, are being joined by new advances in computer controlled in-vessel systems, which allows for improved process controls.
The conversion of the facility will allow us to treat more difficult to process materials, in line with European regulations, while still producing a high quality, fully accredited PAS100 compost product.
Deerdykes in-vessel facility
Our construction contract was completed in March 2006. The initial phases of work have been supported by WRAP (The Waste & Resources Action Programme) funding.
As a trusted company, we believe our role is not only to support local authorities and businesses in meeting government targets, but to change attitudes and perceptions towards composting.
Our compost can do a lot of this work for us. Whether you are a landscape architect, contractor, grower or growing media manufacturer, you know you are buying a quality compost that has been thoroughly checked at every stage of the composting process.
Not only that, but you can be confident that you are working towards a better environment for Scotland.
