Thinking about a water meter?

You may be thinking about how much water you use and what you could do to save water in your home and garden. Scottish Water may be able to help you to measure your water usage and only pay for what you use. If you feel that you are already water efficient then you may benefit from installing a water meter in your home.

You can opt, at your own cost, to have a meter installed on the water supply to your property. Scottish Water will provide the meter only at our expense, all other costs involved in creating the space for the meter to be installed must be met by you, the homeowner. These costs will include a survey charge and any installation charges.

To find out about what is involved in getting a water meter installed and the associated costs, you can get more information by viewing/downloading our 'your guide to metered charges' from the Useful Links section on the right hand side of this page.

If you don’t own the property then you must have the owner’s permission to get a meter installed. Where the property is not metered or occupied for a full year the charges will be apportioned on a daily basis.

The amount you will pay for meter installation costs will depend on the size of the meter required to serve your house or dwelling and the type of installation - the costs for 2010/11 are detailed in the Schedule of Rates which you can view/download from the Useful Links section on the right.

You can use the DIY water usage calculator in the Useful Links section on the right to help estimate your average water consumption. You can then use this total to work out how much you may be charged if a water meter was installed, and compare this against what you are charged now based on your Council Tax Band for your property.

You can also use the Metered Charges v's Council Tax 2010/11 comparison table in the Useful Links section to compare the annual metered charges you would pay if you had a meter installed against the unmetered charges which you currently pay which are linked to the Council Tax Band for your home.

The Scheme of Charges 2010/11 (page 7-9) provides information on the charges you will pay in 2010/11 if your home has a water meter. You can also find further information on the meter services for households and the associated costs on page 19-20. You can view/download the Scheme of Charges 2010/11 from the Useful Links on the right hand side of this page.

If you are interested in applying for a water meter for your home, then please print out and complete the application form in the Useful Links section on the right hand side of this page. Send your completed form along with a cheque made payable to Scottish Water to cover the cost of the survey fee (£81.90 ex vat) to:
