Keeping Your River Safe

Questions and Answers

Q. Are there any health risks to people using the river for recreation?

A. SEPA stringently regulates all effluent discharges to water course. There is no increased risk from relocating the outfall from the Mashock to the Clyde.

Q. What happens if my garden floods?

A. During periods of heavy rainfall there will be no change to the current situation in the River Clyde at Crossford.  There is no increased risk due to relocation of the outfall.

Q. Will I see the outfall?

A. We have selected a location where you are least likely to see the outfall. At the average low flow recorded over the last ten years, location 1 will still be submerged.

Q. Is the capacity of the works being increased?

A. There is no additional capacity being provided through these improvements.  However, there remains sufficient capacity within the works to allow for planned development as detailed in the Council’s Local Plan.

Q. Will there be any signs to mark the outfall?

A. No. There is no danger associated with the outfall and there is no need to erect signage.

Q. Are Scottish Water aware of sudden drops in the water level in the River Clyde?

A. Some residents have reported rapid drops in water levels for short periods of time. Scottish Power have indicated that occasionally the Bonnington Hydro Scheme ceases operation to clear river debris from its intakes. This can cause a temporary reduction in flow down the Clyde for a period of a few hours.
