Argyll & Bute sees clearer, fresher drinking water
What we're doing
Our 2010 Vision for Argyll & Bute will deliver a more secure supply of better quality drinking water for 60,000 residents in Argyll & Bute and the thousands of tourists who visit one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions every year.
Amount invested
We plan to invest around £72m in Argyll & Bute until 2010.
From 2002, we will have invested around £225 million in Argyll & Bute
We are spending more than £5700 per household in the area, against a Scotland-wide average of £1800.

Water Treatment Works projects in Argyll & Bute:
- Loch Ascog WTW in Bute, where a £7m project should be completed in the spring of 2009 and will improve the look and taste of the water delivered to 3500 customers, mainly in Rothesay.
- Dhu Loch WTW by Loch Fad, also on Bute, where supplies to 3000 more customers on the island will be improved when a £1.2m project is completed early next year.
- Campbeltown WTW, which will be upgraded at a cost of £500,000 and will improve the look and taste of the water for 5900 customers in the area when it is completed later this spring.
- Belmore New WTW, where more than £500,000 is being invested to improve the water for about 6100 customers in the Garelochhead, Rosneath, Shandon and Rhu areas in a project which is due to be completed in the summer.
- Port Charlotte, Ballygrant and Torra WTWs on Islay, where almost 3000 residents - most of the island’s population - will have their supplies improved following the completion of work worth a total of about £3.5m by mid-2009.
- Tullich WTW near Oban, where the high quality drinking water supply to 13,000 people will be maintained following £400,000 worth of investment which will be completed this spring.
- Other improvements at Water Treatment Works in Argyll include:Ardrishaig, Kilmelford, Dalmally, Tiree , Tarbert, Carrick Castle, Claddich, Craignure and Bunnessan(Mull), Arinagour (Coll), Finlas and Ardfern, while customers in Cardross will benefit from improvements to the Alexandria WTW in West Dunbartonshire.
