Scrum Difference

We tackling clearer, fresher drinking water for nearly 80,000 people as part of our Vision 2010 for the Borders.

What we're doing

Improvements will be made to:

Howden water treatment works

We will construct a new membrane plant, improve the treatment of the facility and build a new 12 million litre clear water storage tank - that’s enough to fill every swimming pool in the Borders.

Roberton water treatment works

The facility will now be capable of producing 16 million litres of water every day. A robust new main will also be constructed, to deliver water from the new Roberton works direct to the customers’ taps, bypassing Acreknowe and Dodburn, which will be decommissioned by autumn 2009

Rawburn water treatment works

The improvements will deliver environmental improvements in Berwickshire. The residue from the treated water will no longer be discharged to the environment. We are working closely with our environmental regulator SEPA in identifying the best solution for the local community.

Amount invested

  • Howden water treatment works: £10 million
  • Roberton water treatment works: £14.7 million
  • Rawburn water treatment works:  £700,000

Area Affected

Nearly 17,000 people in the Central Borders, including Selkirk, Melrose, Earlston, Lauder and parts of Galashiels.

The water supply serving more than 42,000 people in Hawick, Jedburgh, Kelso and St Boswells will be radically transformed. Currently these communities are served by 3 plants. Sites at Acreknowe and Dodburn will be made redundant by autumn 2009, with the fully refurbished Roberton Water Treatment Works providing clearer, fresher drinking water across the region.

A Team Effort

Councillor Parker is welcoming the level of investment Scottish Water is delivering in the Borders:

“Scottish Water has an excellent track record of investment in the Scottish Borders and my Council has worked in partnership with them on a number of projects which have been a huge benefit to our area.  There can be no doubt that Scottish Water are committed to our region and strive to ensure that they are constantly improving their services to Borders residents."

Hawick Head Coach, Jim Hay, is in no doubt about the benefits it will deliver to his players:

“Modern rugby players have shed the beer drinking reputation of the past. We still like to unwind after a game, but maintaining a healthy diet and keeping properly hydrated is so important – it can give us that vital edge over our opponents. Healthy, hydrated muscle tissue is around 75% water. We encourage the team to drink water before, during and after matches and training to help boost energy levels, stay alert and help prevent cramp.”
