Our vision for Edinburgh
Early in 2007 Scottish Water identified £130 million pounds of funding across Edinburgh and the Lothians and the projects are now in full swing
Scottish Water is rolling out a number of projects which will deliver tangible benefits to thousands of customers in the Capital and the Lothians. Last year we identified clearer, fresher drinking water as the key target for the region. This will account for more than two-thirds of our investment over the year ahead.
Funding to improve the water infrastructure is also paramount and a significant level of investment will also target improvements to the delivery of this improved quality supply.
Clearer, Fresher Water
We have already identified a number of significant projects to provide clearer, fresher drinking water for customers in Edinburgh. More than two-thirds (67%) of Scottish Water’s budget for the capital, over the year ahead, will be directed towards improving the quality of drinking water.
Among the key projects are :
- The new multi-million pounds Glencorse Water Treatment Works (WTW) will provide clearer, fresher water to around 450,000 people across the capital. See www.scottishwater.co.uk/glencorse for the project's progress
- Nearly £10 million will be pumped into improving Marchbank WTW. Construction Work began in the spring 2008 to upgrade these Works serving people in the south west of Edinburgh, including Colinton, Balerno, Currie and Juniper Green; the North, from Cramond to Leith as well as parts of West Lothian.
Clearer, Fresher, Greener
Over the next year a number of significant projects will begin to improve the city’s wastewater facilities.
Among the key projects are :
- The sewer network in the Portobello area will be improved with three separate storm sewer projects beginning early in the New Year.

We are aware of the increased demand for new homes in parts of Edinburgh and the local authority has provided us with lists of their priority projects. Scottish Water plays an important part in the process, and we are phasing our investment in line with their plans.
Throughout the capital a significant partof our budget for the next year is targeted towards growth.
Some of these key projects include:
- Investing nearly £10 million pounds at Marchbank will not only allow the facility to provide clearer, fresher, drinking water to Leith, Granton and other parts of North Edinburgh, but introducing a Dissolved Air Flotation process will also allow the works to treat more raw water.
- In the South East Wedge we are working with developers to construct a new treated water storage tank and around 6 miles of trunk main. This will allow for further growth in this rapidly expanding area of the Lothians.
