Why save your drains

Putting things down your sinks and toilets can cause blockages in your drains and have disastrous environmental consequences.  

Many of us are unaware that pouring fats, oil and grease down their sink can cause Scottish Water lots of problems, as the hot liquid cools it solidifies and builds up over time causing blockages in private drainage pipes and sewers.
 
These blockages in private drainage pipes and sewers can cause waste water to flood into gardens and properties creating a mess and inconvenience for you, the householder, as well as being a health hazard which harms wildlife and your local environment. In the end it costs time and money for both you and Scottish Water to repair.

Similar with flushing items such as sanitary items, cotton buds, wipes or nappies etc.  This can block public sewers, and damage the screens at waste water treatment works which are used to filter out waste – so that water can be returned safely to the environment.  

Sometimes, during heavy rainfall, the flow of waste water in sewers increases hundreds of times.  Diluted waste water can sometimes be allowed to flow into rivers or the sea to prevent homes from flooding.  Unfortunately, the items that shouldn't be flushed can escape, polluting rivers and beaches.
