Top Up From the Tap and Toast the West Highland Way06 October 2020
We're urging walkers of the West Highland Way to top up from the tap and raise a toast to mark the route’s 40th anniversary celebrations this autumn.
And what better way to toast Scotland’s best-loved long-distance walking route than with a drink of one of the country’s best-loved products - the nation’s world-class tap water!

Raise a toast with the nation's world-class tap water!
“It’s really important for walkers to stay hydrated and the top up taps are a great addition to the Way, encouraging more people to use refillable water bottles.”Jane McGeary

Scottish Water’s Top up Taps at the north and south ends of the iconic West Highland Way make that easy. With a refillable water bottle in hand, thousands of walkers can stay hydrated on-the-go at both ends of the 96-mile route.
The taps in Gordon Square, Fort William and Douglas Street, Milngavie were the 5th and 9th taps to be installed respectively as part of a nationwide roll-out.
Lorna Neilson, senior project manager at Scottish Water, said: “We’re excited that Scottish Water is a prominent feature of the West Highland Way and we hope that many walkers will mark the 40th anniversary of this iconic route by raising a bottle of great-tasting Scottish Water straight from our Top up Taps to toast it!
“Since being installed in Fort William and Milngavie last year, the combined output from these taps has been 14,791 litres of water – that’s the equivalent of 44,820 single-use plastic bottles and a lot of thirsty walkers!”
Jane McGeary, a member of the West Highland Way 40th Anniversary Team, said: “Thank you to Scottish Water for the toast! The 40th anniversary is a chance to celebrate the great success of Scotland's first long-distance route and ensure it remains an experience that can be enjoyed by future generations. It’s really important for walkers to stay hydrated and the top up taps are a great addition to the Way, encouraging more people to use refillable water bottles.”
Our Your Water Your Life campaign is encouraging more people to carry a refillable water bottle and drink tap water on the go to benefit their health, save money and protect the planet.
To date, thirty-one Top up Taps have been installed at locations across the country with 70 expected to be operational by the end of March 2021.
An online exhibition and anniversary film capturing the spirit of 40 years of the West Highland Way and 96 miles of the route can be enjoyed at www.westhighlandway.org.
