Scottish Water has joined an elite of organisations to receive the prestigious Armed Forces Covenant Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award.

We have been recognised as one of the most supportive of Britain’s Armed Forces community in the workplace, from both private and public sectors across the UK.
Just a handful of organisations from Scotland received the Gold Award this year.

The honour highlights our commitment to the inclusion of employees who are members of the Armed Forces community, and the valuable contribution they make within society and the workplace.

Stuart Sutherland, Co-Lead for Scottish Water’s Armed Forces Network said: “We’re extremely proud to receive this Gold Award in recognition of our forces friendly credentials.

“We continue to develop and grow our commitment to our veterans, reservists, forces families and the wider defence community.

“This award establishes Scottish Water as an employer of choice and demonstrates we take our commitments seriously in creating an environment where everyone can flourish and achieve their full potential.”

The Gold Award salutes our commitment and the work we have achieved, including the development of our support to the Career Transition Partnership; supporting Armed Forces Week by hosting our first virtual event; and developing an enhanced understanding of issues through engagement with the defence community.

Scottish Water signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2017 and we have worked to encourage and support our supply chain and beyond to sign up.

Our active Armed Forces Network – part of Scottish Water’s Belong Network, supports our serving and ex service personnel, and their families and friends.

Stuart added: “I’m delighted to see our commitment and hard work result in such high praise and formal recognition from the Defence Relationship Management and we will continue knowing that our contribution is making a difference.”

Announcing this year’s winners, Johnny Mercer, Minister for Defence People and Veterans, said: “I am grateful for the positive attitude and flexible policies these organisations have adapted towards the defence community which is testament to the fantastic contribution our serving personnel, veterans and their families can make to any organisation.

“I am delighted that so many companies are supporting our people and that, through this scheme, we can give them the public recognition they deserve.”

The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme has been running for seven years, and Scottish Water now joins a total of 353 award winners across the UK. This year’s other Scottish Gold Award winners include Aberdeen City Council, Fife Council,  High Life Highland, Scottish Engineering and Glasgow Caledonian University.
