Balfron 10K Run in bid to go green

Pledge to Go Green

Runners will be encouraged to top up from the tap as part of Scottish Water's Your Water Your Life campaign.

The Balfron 10k in Stirlingshire is going for gold in the race to a better environment.

Runners will be able to stay hydrated and protect the environment with help from Scottish Water, as part of its Your Water Your Life campaign.

Race organisers are to introduce a series of measures to reduce plastic waste in the environment at the event on Sunday, 12 May, such as wooden medals for participants which have been made by a social enterprise group.

On the day, runners are also being encouraged to car-share to minimise air pollution and the run will be paper-free, with announcements going digital and participants able to sign up to the race online.

Scottish Water is supporting the event by providing drinking water from a temporary water bowser installed especially for the race, and offering runners refillable bottles to top up from the tap.

The 10k will start and end at Balfron Campus, following a route through the village centre and taking in the beautiful surrounding Stirlingshire countryside.

Ruaridh MacGregor, Scottish Water Corporate Affairs Manager, who has signed up to take part in the race, said:  “We are delighted to support the Balfron 10K race and to help the organisers make it as environmentally-friendly as possible.

“Everyone can do their bit to help reduce their impact on the planet. As part of our Your Water Your Life campaign, we encourage everyone to carry a refillable water bottle, top up from the tap and stay hydrated and we are pleased that all runners in the Balfron 10K will be able to do so with our water bowser and refillable bottles.”

Julie Ross, one of the organisers of event, known as the Mulberry Bush Montessori Balfron 10k, said: “To have Scottish Water’s support for our green ambitions in 2019 is hugely welcome.

“We may be a small village race but, by teaming up with much bigger organisations who are at the forefront of the campaign to reduce single-use plastics, we can spread the word among the Scottish running community and beyond about the refill revolution.

“We hope to see our runners using Scottish Water’s Your Water Your Life distinctive blue refillable bottles on training runs, in gyms, schools, colleges and at future running events across Scotland."
