Today, Friday 12th October, sees the Fair Isle community celebrate reliable 24 hour power for the first time as their new renewable energy system goes live.

This achievement marks the culmination of years of hard work by the islanders, which took a key step forward in 2014 when Scottish Water supported a feasibility study as it investigated options to meet the future energy needs of the island’s water supply.

The new island-wide high voltage network uses an innovative renewable energy system, combining three wind turbines, ground mounted solar panels and battery storage.

Scottish Water’s Chief Operating Officer Peter Farrer said: “We’re very proud to have worked with the local community, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and other partners over the last few years to bring 24 hour power to Fair Isle.

“A continuous electricity supply will make an enormous contribution to the community’s future. The project marks a new chapter in Fair Isle’s remarkable energy story, harnessing the island’s sustainable resources more effectively than ever before.

“Scottish Water’s investment will also play a vital part in ensuring that we can continue to provide clean, fresh, great-tasting water to our island customers’ taps, long into the future – for the same low price all over Scotland and with a reduced impact on the environment.”
