Water Byelaws

Water Byelaws

This page gives information on The Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws 2014.

What are Water Byelaws?

Scottish Water provides good, clean, safe and high quality drinking water to 2.4 million households across Scotland. We use many measures to maintain and protect water quality and, among these are Water Byelaws.

Water Byelaws are created under Section 70 of the Water (Scotland) Act 1980 to help ensure the safety of the water supply, with the main aim being the prevention of contamination of the public water supply. They also help prevent waste, misuse and undue consumption of water.

Water Byelaws help ensure that connections to the public network are safe by regulating the fittings and materials used in plumbing systems and water using appliances.

How do Byelaws affect you?

Scottish Water has a legal obligation to enforce the requirements of the Water Byelaws, whilst owners and occupiers of premises have a legal obligation to ensure that their plumbing systems, appliances and fittings used, meet the requirements of the Water Byelaws.

Importantly, compliance helps protect the health and well-being of everyone using the public supply in Scotland, so they help protect you, your family and neighbours.

Water Byelaws are an important part in keeping our drinking water safe and at its best ever quality. It is in everyone’s interest that we all play our part in ensuring their requirements are met.

Helping you comply

If you're an owner or occupier of a property, or if you install or maintain plumbing systems and water fittings, you have a legal obligation to meet the requirements of the Water Byelaws.
