Eela Treatment Works receives TTU
02 December 2025SCOTTISH WATER AND RSE PRESS ON WITH EELA WATER TREATMENT WORKS IN SHETLAND
Work at a new water treatment works in Eela for Scottish Water continues.
The publicly owned utility is working with Ross-Shire Engineering (RSE) to upgrade the facility in Shetland.
The current plant, built in 1978, provides approximately 4.3million litres of water a day to around 5,400 residents.
With new technology and an innovative approach to modular engineering, Scottish Water along with RSE will upgrade this essential plant to bring in the best of modern technology and techniques.
Appointed as Principal Contractor and Principal Designer, RSE is leading the full delivery of civil, MEICA, process engineering and commissioning of the works to replace the existing plant with a new 5.7Ml/d ceramic membrane treatment facility
With any construction work on Shetland comes unique intricacies with the delivery of equipment and materials, recently RSE took delivery of modular units via sea transport, with plans to start commissioning these in January 2026.
David Lavery is the Project Manager in charge for Scottish Water, he said: “Eela Water Treatment Works is a key site for our customers in Shetland.
“We are planning to provide some of the most state-of-the-art systems and help minimise disruption to communities when things do happen.
“This investment shows our commitment to keeping customers connected and up to date across the country.”
Michael Agolini is the Delivery Manager for RSE Water Technologies. He said: “Our mission is to redefine how water treatment infrastructure is delivered.
“Through modular design, digital integration, and sustainable materials, RSE is setting new standards for quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.”
Completion of the project is planned for November 2026 and progress is being made to meet this target.
