Project Overview

Work will begin late September at Balgreen to improve one of the Water of Leith’s combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Located beside Pansy Walk and near Balgreen Primary School, the unscreened outfall previously discharged debris during storm events, raising environmental and community concerns.

The project is being delivered in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (complete): Diversion of a gas main and installation of new outfall pipework.
  • Phase 2 (starting September 2025): Construction of a screened CSO chamber, decommissioning of the old outfall, and creation of a maintenance layby.

Once complete, the upgrade will reduce pollution, improve water quality, and enhance the amenity of this popular riverside route.

Why We Are Doing It

Working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) Scottish Water has identified priority storm overflows for improvement or replacement for water quality or aesthetic – sewer related debris – reasons.

Under the banner ‘Draining the Rain, Enhancing the Environment’ the investment will help prevent sewage related debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during periods of rainfall.
