Saltcoats to Stevenston Rising Sewer Main Bursts
Rising Sewer Main
The rising sewer main runs from Saltcoats pumping station (top left) past and under the caravan site and down past Ardeer Primary School (bottom right)
We are currently dealing with two separate bursts on a 700mm rising sewer main that runs between Saltcoats and Stevenston.
A burst was discovered within the area between Auchenharvie Golf Course and Moorpark Road West on Christmas Eve. A week later a second significant burst was identified on the other side of the railway line close to Ardeer Primary School in Stevenston.
Good progress has been made on the burst next to the caravan park. The damaged pipe has now been replaced and the excavation will be backfilled. This section of the rising sewer main from the caravan park to the railway line will be relined over the next few months as part of a major capital investment project.
However, CCTV surveys of the pipe running south from the railway line past Clarke Crescent show the sewer to be in particularly poor condition with the potential for numerous further failures.
Given its location under a nature reserve and the significant amount of disruption necessary to deal with any future bursts we have decided to install a temporary overland pipeline from the southern side of the caravan park. This will take approximately four weeks to complete and will dramatically reduce the risk of bursts.
At the same time, we will begin work on a permanent solution to replace the existing 700mm pipe which we anticipate completing before the bathing season begins in June.
This will provide a brand-new asset with a lifespan of around 50 years and will bring peace of mind to the community and protection for the environment.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency is being kept informed.
We would like to thank all those affected for their patience and understanding.
One burst is on a section of pipe due to be relined shortly
The second burst is on land close to Ardeer Primary School
