Skelmorlie Water Mains Upgrade
Project Overview
We are carrying out a significant investment to improve the resilience and quality of the water supply in North Ayrshire following a spate of recent bursts.
Nearly two miles of new pipework will be installed along the route of the A78 between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie.
Work began on Tuesday 7 May 2024, with the entire project expected to take approximately 11 months to complete.

What We Are Doing
We are investing approximately £2million to install a new water main between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie along the route of the main coast road, the A78.
Starting from just south of Wemyss Bay the work will be carried out under rolling traffic management reducing the road to one lane for approximately 250 metres at a time.
A convoy method will be deployed between 8am and 5pm to guide vehicles in turn through the works. Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in place overnight.
Major delays are not anticipated but road users are advised to plan ahead an allow extra time for their journeys.

Why We Are Doing It
The existing cast iron 6-inch main has become corroded and prone to bursts, impacting on the quality and reliability of supply for customers in the area.
This project will dramatically improve the resilience of the local network and ensure customers continue to enjoy great tasting water from a reliable supply.

Work Underway
Work to install the new upgraded water main is underway. Traffic is being led past the work area in a convoy system during the day, Monday to Friday.
We have implemented additional measures to improve the road traffic management on the A78 to reduce delays for road users.
Traffic lights are now manually controlled earlier in the morning, from 5pm to 7pm on weekdays and from 7am to 7pm at the weekend.
