Hamilton Road Rutherglen Sewer Upgrade

Project Overview
We are carrying out repairs to a brick egg sewer on Hamiton Road in Rutherglen.
Surveys have revealed it is in poor condition and there have been a number of collapses and blockages causing localised flooding.
Work gets underway at the end of May 2025 for approximately four months.
At A Glance
- £700,000 project
- To alleviate flooding and improve the resilience of the sewer network
- Delivered by delivery partner George Leslie
- Work starts late May 2025 for approximately four months

Road Closure
Hamilton Road will be closed for approximately four months. Pedestrian access will be maintained and all businesses open as usual
What We Are Doing
The project will see sections of the sewer removed and replaced with new concrete pipes, sections of the existing sewer relined. New manholes will also be constructed.
The project is being delivered in two phases to minimise disruption as much as possible. The first phase will see the western end of Hamilton Road closed from Stonelaw Road to the junction with Wardlaw Drive until September.
The second phase – from around mid-July for approximately five weeks – will require the closure of Gallowflat Street at its junction with Reid Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
We have already consulted with local businesses to allow them to operate and will continue to work with residents to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.

Two Phases
The project will be delivered in two phases
Why We Are Doing It
This section of the sewer network has been vulnerable to flooding in past.
CCTV inspections has revealed the egg brick sewer is in relatively poor condition, with bricks missing, evidence of collapse and build up of fats, oils and grease.
The project will reduce the risk of future collapse and add capacity and resilience to the sewer network.
