Craighead Water Treatment Works Upgrade

Overview

We are investing in a £16 million project to replace our existing Craighead Water Treatment Works (WTW) serving Huntly.  The new water treatment works will continue to provide our customers in Huntly and the surrounding area with up to 2 million litres of high quality drinking water per day and has been constructed opposite the existing works.

The current treatment works is located approximately 2 miles west of Huntly on the A920.

New Water Treatment Works for Huntly

The new treatment works has been constructed opposite the existing works, 2 miles West of Huntly

Why are we doing this work?

The existing Craighead WTW has reached the end of its economic life and the existing plant is not suitable for refurbishment. The new Water Treatment Works that has been built will provide a high quality drinking water to Huntly and the surrounding area for years to come.

What does the work involve?

The construction of the new Water Treatment Works took place between 2021 and 2023, which final commissioning activity ongoing.  The existing WTW will remain operational until the new works is ready to take over its essential role in serving the local community.

Due to the increased number of heavy vehicles regularly entering and exiting the site a reduced speed limit has been in place on the A920 during the construction period.  This is to maintain safety at the site and to reduce the risk for all traffic using the A920 at this location.
